I’m Amy. I’m from the remote island of Shetland, but I am now living on Mainland Scotland near Aberdeen in the North East coast.
After I left the Anderson High School in Lerwick, I went to the local college to study a NC in Art and Design. I always had an interest in art, design and being creative, but through this portfolio course was where my interest with textiles started.
I went on to complete a BA in Contemporary Textiles at the University of Highlands and Islands Shetland campus, and progressed on to finish my honours year at Heriot Watt University, in the Scottish Borders, where I specialised in woven textiles. My work focused on the heritage story of traditional woven Shetland textiles with the introduction of new design ideas. I have always been fascinated about Shetlands location on the map being nearer the Scandinavian regions than Edinburgh.
I then went on to Glasgow School of Art where I studied my Masters in Fashion and Textiles and finished in September 2015.
Since I finished my studies I have continued to live South, on the mainland Scotland and have worked as a designer in the Scottish Textiles Manufacturing industry, which has provided me with a breadth of experience.
I have a love for all things textile related, yarn wraps, geometric shapes and my home up north in the Shetland Isles for its beautiful surroundings, uniqueness and small community vibes.
I would love to hear from you if you have any questions about my work or anything textile related – please get in touch below.
